Meanings and Origins of Botanical Names of New Zealand Plants
by Marie Taylor, 201pp limpbound, Auckland Botanical Society, c/Auckland War Memorial Museum, PO Box 92-018, Auckland 2003, RRP$27.00. Ever wondered what those scientific names mean? Marie Taylor (who died in 1999) spent four years reworking a 1945/1950 volume by
Prof. Arnold Wall and Dr H.H. Allan, more than doubling its coverage in the process. There are 3500 entries in this book and the origins of the names are traced as far back as Greek. The book demonstrates the descriptive nature of botanical nomenclature, its frequent recognition of botanical habits, or the people recalled in the species name.
