Bush Vitality, a visual assessment kit
by Helmut Janssen, 176pp limpbound, Horizons Regional Council (Manawatu), Private Bag 11-025, Palmerston North 2003, RRP$29.95. Local government in the Manawatu region has published this guide for people caring for native forest on their land. It should prove a useful tool for
conservation work, in central New Zealand particularly. The author has also made broader references which may help people working in warmer or colder zones as well (where, of course, there are differences in forest species). The book pictures ‘healthy and unhealthy’ forest in particular, by comparing the trees themselves, but sometimes birds and insects can be indicators. There are notes on bird corridors, and food trees to plant, and lots of tables to fill in if you want. There are some oddities but at this price the book has so many ideas it is worth checking out anyway.
