Handbook of the Birds of the World, volume eight, Broadbills to Tapaculos
edited by Josep del Hoyo and others, 845pp hardback, BirdLife International/Lynx Editions, Barcelona 2003, RRP160 Euros. Here is the eighth volume of the world survey of birds sponsored by BirdLife International with which Forest and Bird
is associated. The broad and authoritative surveys are conducted family by family; it is a sad measure of New Zealand’s relatively small range of bird species that there are no New Zealand birds in this particular volume. The rich photographic and pictorial sections continue the outstanding quality of this series which here
begins coverage of the passerine birds of the world. There is a vision of eight more volumes of ‘perching or song birds’ to come. This one is for the library collection and the teaching institution, or the very dedicated collector of bird books.
