The Living Reef, the ecology of New Zealand's rocky reefs
edited by Neil Andrew and Malcolm Francis, 284pp hardback, Craig Potton Publishing 2003, RRP$59.95. This series of 32 expert essays on the life of our threatened ocean habitats is also ‘dressed up’ as a fine coffee-table book typical of its publishers. The
various authors write of species and places, from the kelps to the fishes and invertebrates that live among them. The detailed science is pointed up with vibrant, pictorial reflections of sealife in superb colour photographs. Such portraits lift scientific descriptions to a level where they become persuasive arguments for protecting our threatened reefs. Several key reef habitats in New Zealand waters are also described. A subsidy from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research has made it possible to publish such a highly specified, specialised book, at such a reasonable price.
