Mountain hut and beech forest habitat in the South Branch of the Hurunui catchment. This river rises from the Southern Alps in North Canterbury inland from Lake Sumner. Managed by the Department of Conservation as a 'mainland island', the Hurunui South Branch is the main refuge of the orange-fronted parakeet.
