Revegetation Project in Marlborough Sounds

, chair,

Marlborough Forest and Bird.

—MARGARET PEACE

Four years ago the late Devon Close, a former member of both Wellington and Marlborough branches, bequeathed a considerable legacy to Forest and Bird. A small part of this is being used by Marlborough Forest and Bird to establish a revegetation project at Whatamonga Bay, east of Picton. The land is in an area managed by the Department of Conservation and was formerly used for grazing. DoC staff have ring-fenced an area of about 0.4 hectare, known as Devon Close Memorial Reserve. In place of long grass, gorse and blackberry, several hundred native trees and shrubs are now well-established. The aim is to recreate an ecosystem like that original to the area. As DoC has insufficient money and people power for this work, cooperation with Forest and Bird is a valuable partnership.
