Predator-proof Fence Planned for Bushy Park
A pest-proof fence is planned for the island of forest owned by Forest and Bird at Bushy Park in the Wanganui district. The Trustees of Bushy Park, who manage the associated homestead and the forest, have launched an appeal to fund 4.8 kilometres of fence around the rainforest reserve. The forest remnant of 87 hectares survives in a sea of cleared farmland and contains a northern rata reputed to be the largest in the country. A feasability study conducted with funding from Lottery Environment and Heritage concluded such a fence was not only practical but desirable. The perimeter fence will be further supported by a 750-metre-long rodent fence behind the homestead. The total cost of keeping pests out of the bush by fencing is $880,000. Funding is being sought from a variety of sources and an appeal brochure is included in this issue of Forest & Bird. It is hoped to begin work in the late spring.
