Our 80th Birthday
Waiheke Island
—SANDRA LEE
Happy Birthday! The Society has good cause to celebrate the work of our members over all the decades leading up until now. The debate on where the Society’s focus should be — birds, forests and/or the coastal marine environment is not a new one. As conservationists we should understand more than most that biodiversity doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The article on our most-at-risk seabirds reinforces the need for vigilant campaigns to protect the environment on which these species depend. As I depart for Niue, where they have their own conservation pressures, I hope that some of the many ideas that I’ve come across in the work of Forest and Bird may be of assistance. My best wishes to all our
members for a successful year’s work in 2003. Kia Ora na,
Hon Sandra Lee was elected a distinguished life member of Forest and Bird following her retirement from Parliament last year. She is now New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Niue.
