Pick Up A Pack
by Keith Olsen, 56pp limpbound, Reed, Auckland 2003, RRP $19.95 Intended for children, this is ‘a guide to tramping and camping the New Zealand way and a great introduction to the way we used to be. We don’t usually notice books specifically for children, but this one is a delight. Descriptive watercolours and tight text outline what to do in the bush. It begins with the right to wander and
how to treat the countryside, moves to equipment and techniques for camping out, navigation and safety, and so on through the use of mountain huts, cooking and suitable foods, water and hygiene, and emergency drills. There are even notes on back-country birds and animals, and ideas for mountain biking, caving, rock climbing and the safe way to learn. People taking children into the bush will also find it a refreshing reminder of their responsibilities.
