Access Permits and Fees
The Department of Conservation issues 50 permits per day for visits to Kapiti Island Nature Reserve. Overnight stays are not permitted, and you can’t book more than three months in advance. During the summer, demand for permits is high, so it pays to book at least a month ahead for a weekday visit and a couple of months ahead for weekends. Plenty of spaces are available over early winter, spring and autumn, which offer equally good opportunities. Facilities on the island are limited to a shelter and toilets. Take your own lunch
and drinking water (at least two litres). Wear sturdy footwear and take warm clothing and a waterproof jacket. Permits are non-refundable and if the boat trip is cancelled because of bad weather you will need to either re-book on another day or forfeit the island permit. The total fees to visit Kapiti Island Nature Reserve are $9.00/adult and $4.50/child plus the cost of launch transport, which may vary between the two operators and according to the size of your party.
