The Kauri, The Pohutukawa
by Alina Arkins, photographs by Len Doel, 32pp limpbound, Reed Children’s Books, Auckland 2002, RRP $14.95 each. The first two books in the ‘New Zealand Trees’ series are intended for young readers but are packed with interesting natural history and conservation concerns which may well interest adults going outdoors. The life cycles of these two major trees of the north are matched with
notes on their adaptations to their preferred environments. Threats to their survival are outlined, along with some social history, including current conservation efforts. The full-colour, pictorial approach makes them particularly attractive. ‘3
