Walking the Waitakere Ranges
By Alison Dench and Lee-Anne Parore, 159pp, limpbound, New Holland, Auckland 2001, RRP $24.95, There are more than 30 coastal and bush walks in the ranges west of Auckland described in this book. Some are pleasant, most of them rugged and some very wild: regularly people get lost and a good map and guidebook are recommended. Useful features of Walking the Waitakere Ranges are the introductory descriptions so a walk can be taken with a purpose. There are also useful hints on how to get to the tracks, and where to park on the narrow and confusing access roads. The walk descriptions include interesting historical notes and botanical information to get the most value for the grunt. Sketch maps are indicative only, however; on some of the wilder trails a topographic map would be a useful supplement.
