Tuitime on the World Wide Web
Wel new natural history website for New Zealand children has been launched by the New Zealand Ecological Society (www.tuitime.org.nz). Tuitime gives primary school children an opportunity to learn about the ecology of the forest, using plants and animals familiar to
them. ‘Tiaki Tui’ is the central character in the website, in an interactive game simulating a day in the life of tui. Tiaki must gather enough food to feed herself, find a mate and then rear chicks. Along the way she must cope with competitors such as wasps and bellbirds that eat the same food, and
avoid predators such as cats and stoats that may eat her. Tuitime is an online educational programme that supports science and Te Reo Maori, levels 2 to 4. It consists of the interactive game, learning activities, a guide for teachers, pre- and postassessment tests, an
encyclopaedia, and a glossary. Tuitime complements Forest and Bird's own KCC website (www.kcc.org.nz) which offers a broader range of nature information and activities. The KCC website is particularly useful for school projects and is very popular with members and schools.
