Major Expansion of Auckland Museum

| \ | atural history collections at the Auckland War Memorial Museum will benefit from a $46.5 million upgrade beginning late this year. Six floors, beginning underground and rising to a roof dome, will be built within an exisiting courtyard of the neoclassical building. The project marks the 150th year of what is arguably the country’s leading museum of natural history and Maori culture. The redevelopment follows major reconstruction of the existing building carried out in recent years. This included the construction of five new natural history galleries. The additional space will make it possible to bring back to a single site, collections stored in less than satisfactory conditions about the city. In all 8900 square metres of extra floor space is planned, including more educational facilities, more exhibition space, restaurants and extensive storage. The Government will contribute a net $23.56 million of the $46.5 million required, but the museum must raise the rest.
