Invasion of the Pied Fantails
—DIANA REEVES
eth and Ron Richards of Upper Moutere in rural Nelson, had an invasion of pied fantails last winter. During the coldest months of June and July, the birds huddled together on a small length of clothesline in a garage. The colder it got, the more fantails came, mainly
males but the occasional female too. Any number from five to 17 birds spent the night in the garage, the greater number on the coldest night in July when it was minus five degrees. ‘As it warmed up they disappeared, write Beth and Ron Richards.
