Doubtless Careless
Curator,
Kaitaia
Michael Ibbotson,
The Far North Museum has been a keen recipient of your magazine for some years and we are impressed with its superb presentation and content. Bearing this in mind it grieves me to inform you of a few unfortunate mistakes in one of your photo captions on page 28 of the August issue. It should read ‘Rangiawhia Bay on the Karikari Peninsula visited by the French explorer de Surville aboard the St Jean Baptiste etc.
Never trust to memory. The picture was of course taken in Doubtless Bay where Surville called, just across the Karikari Peninsula from Rangaunu. We followed several authorities, academic and geographic, in shortening the name of Jean-Francois-Marie de Surville to Surville.
