Common Ferns and Fern Allies, Common Seashells of New Zealand
both by Brian Parkinson
Mushrooms and Other Fungi of New Zealand
by Don Horne, about 64 pages, limp, Reed New Zealand Nature Series, Auckland 1999 and 2000, RRP$14.95. This is an old series with a new face, replacing paintings with photographs, and also changing authors. If you like to compare a specimen in the field with a selection of pictures these are good little books. Some of the words used in the descriptions may cause the lay reader to consult frequently the
useful little charts of scientific features, but fortunately the photographs are particularly effective, so you don't need to know the jargon to work out a possible identification. Habitat and distribution notes also help. The books are easy to handle in the field, and useful primers.
