Field Guide to New Zealand Seabirds
by Brian Parkinson, technical editor Tim Lovegrove, 136pp, New Holland, Auckland 2000, Limp RRP$29.95. The major attraction of this book is the more than 100 photographs of New Zealand seabirds. Determining the difference between the fast-mov-ing shapes of grey, white and black birds from a heaving boat may remain a mystery but there is plenty here to help identify birds washed up on the beach. Better, the book divides New Zealand and its surrounding waters into four zones, to help establish the likelihood of one species occurring over another. The little maps and ‘where to see’ information (including when) neatly condense the basic information useful in a ‘field’ guide. Recommended when cruising offshore or going to see whales and dolphins.
