Underwater and topside at Goat Island Marine Reserve, near Leigh on the Rodney Coast, beyond Warkworth. At top, schnapper and blue maomao school about a diver. The reserve is the site of the Leigh Marine Research Laboratory of the University of Auckland. It also draws many day visitors, particularly in summer. The first marine reserve in New Zealand, Goat Island has proved almost too successful, as it is sometimes overrun with human visitors (see Forest & Bird February 2000).
