New Nominee to NZCA

Taupo conservationist, Laura Dawson, has been appointed to a statutory position on the New Zealand Conservation Authority, nominated by the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. The Authority advises the Minister of Conservation and her department on matters of policy, including statutory planning processes, and the creation of

national parks and reserves. A former chair and councillor of Taupo Forest and Bird, Laura Dawson has been active on the branch committee since 1983. She has also served two terms as chair of the Tongariro-Taupo Conservation Board (1993-99), and has wide experience of the issues facing the Department of Conservation in the field. In the early 1980s, Laura Dawson was part of the ‘groundswell’ of public opinion which sought to save Tongariro Forest Park from the former Forest Service, and create a Tongariro conservation park. Among a number of community activities, she has been actively involved in recent moves to protect the water quality of Lake Taupo.
