Mabel Roy and the Tautuku Lodge
John Dawsn
outhern branches recently S recognised the contribution of Mabel Roy who managed the Society’s Tautuku Lodge for 18 years. In 1966, thanks to the vision of William King and others of the Southland and Otago branches, a large bequest to the Otago branch was used to buy 550 hectares of bush-clad hills in the Catlins district of South Otago and erect the Tautuku Lodge. For years it was administered with loving care by Fred and Masie Bennett who then passed on the reins to Mabel Roy. Mabel has now entered a thoroughly deserved retirement.
For 18 years she has managed the Lodge with quiet efficiency, and a dedication that is rarely found these days. At the quarterly meeting of the management committee, which has representatives from the Dunedin, Southland and South Otago branches, lodge chairman Tony Bretherick expressed the deep appreciation of the group for Mabel’s years of service, wished her well and presented her with an elegant certificate recording her achievement. Her place has been taken by Diana Noonan and Keith Olsen of Papatowai.
