Powell's Native Animals of New Zealand
edited by B.J. Gill. original text by A.W.B. Powell, fourth edition, 94 pp, David Bateman, Auckland 1998, RRP$19.95. First published on behalf of the Auckland War Memorial Museum in 1941, this is the Edmonds Cookery Book of natural history. This ‘makeover’ edition is notable for retaining the character and style of the original economy model while taking on a brighter appearance with two-colour printing. The charming, and accurate drawings of the earlier editions are largely retained, and more recent illustrations follow the style of those detailed monochrome pen drawings. Their quality is such that they are still easier to follow than the illustrations in some photographic guides. The book remains surprisingly useful, easy to use, and broad-ranging through the animal world. The descriptive text has been brought up to date. After nearly 60 years, Powell is still a handy first reference for ‘beginners.
