Woven by Water — Histories from the Whanganui River
by David Young, 300 pages, Huia Publishers, PO Box 17-355, Wellington, RRP$54.95. This is a significant view of the river which lies at the heart of the Whanganui National Park. The author has endeavoured to weave together the meaning of place and past in the cultures of the river. His story realises the differences which challenge and enrich our varying views on land and water, and the place of this river as an icon in Maori and New Zealand cultures generally. The publishers, who specialize in ‘books with a Maori focus, have followed a ‘bi-cultural process for its presentation to the public; hoping it will contribute to the knowledge and understanding which New Zealanders have of history ‘as well as providing a challenge to our writing style’ This is not a natural history book but it contains fascinating perspectives germane to conservation initiatives and to the management and extension of the national park.
