The international research vessel, JOIDES Resolution which has been drilling for geological specimens in the subantarctic ocean off New Zealand. Drills from the ship have taken cores from deep below the ocean floor, revealing secrets of the Earth's past, including changing climate and volcanic eruptions. With its hull surrounded by 12 thruster motors, and drilling through a well in the middle of the ship, JOIDES Resolution can hold its position in all but the highest seas.
