This cave in Manukau City is now a scientific reserve for its outstanding geological features. It was formed some 28,000 years ago, when molten lava from the Wiri volcano formed a hard skin, while lava continued to drain away inside. The Matukururu Scientific Reserve was formed to protect the cave as quarrying approached within metres of it.
