Green nomination
THE TAURANGA branch has been nominated by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council for a Green Ribbon Award thanks to the work of branch conservation convener Ken Spencer. Ken assisted the council in developing guidelines for the discharge of dairy shed effluent. The improved standards, which include two-stage oxidation ponds and wetland treatment, were designed to reduce the enriching nitrogen compounds and faecal bacteria of cow shed effluent entering the Tauranga Harbour from its rural catchment. Testing of an apparently
clear stream in the Kaimai Ranges showed faecal bacteria levels above the safe recommended level for swimming water — a not uncommon situation in New Zealand where cows produce a faecal load equivalent to that from 40 million people. Ten percent of this is discharged from dairy sheds and the low level of dairy shed treatment is a major resource management issue. The Green Ribbon Awards, which are made in recognition of efforts to protect the environment, will be announced by the Minister for the Environment later this year.
