Rediscovery of rare gecko
EARLIER THIS year a search co-funded by the Wellington branch rediscovered the rare goldstripe gecko (Hoplodactylus chrysosireticus) on Mana Island. Only four geckos had been
found on the island previously and none in the last ten years. It was feared that the mice which plagued Mana until the 1989-90 eradication may have wiped out the endangered lizard. The survey over several nights was organised by DoC
under the leadership of herpetologist Tony Whitaker. Over a hundred geckos were caught and marked in a number of separate colonies, and preliminary estimates suggest the population on the island might total about 300 animals.
