Forest and Bird Easter Gatherings
South Island 17-20 April Make this Easter an experience of a lifetime by coming to our Western Southland/Fiordland Easter gathering. Visit the World Heritage Fiordland National Park and help the campaign to protect beech forests from woodchipping in Forest and Bird’s proposed Longwoods conservation park. Guided field trips will take you through ancient beech forests — home of the threatened yellowhead — and onto Lake Hauroko with a boat trip across to the wild Wairaurahiri River flowing through the forested wilderness of Waitutu. Learn about the opportunities in Southland for nature tourism, recreation and conservation. Optional trips before and after Easter to Doubtful Sound or Waitutu Forest are an exciting extra: Doubtful Sound-Fiordland Cruise 14-17 April Spend four days before the Easter gathering on a comfortable cruise exploring beautiful Doubtful Sound. Highlights will include shore visits to
the famous Secretary Island, opportunities to see fur seals, rare Fiordland skinks, bottlenose dolphins, Fiordland crested and little blue penguins at close hand. Drift lazily amidst spectacular mountain scenery. Special underwater video will reveal the wonders of the Fiordland Marine world — including red and black coral — as you float overhead. Spaces limited. Cost per person: $510 ex Manapouri; $540 ex Invercargill.
Waitutu Tramping Adventure 20-24 April After Easter join a small guided tramping party to Waitutu Forest — the best remaining example of primeval New Zealand: dramatic sweeps of rimuforested terraces, rich native birdlife, unspoilt wilderness and river and coastal scenery. You will need to be fit and have tramping experience. Cost $70 plus your own food. Places limited so book early.
