Project Heritage Inventory
FOLLOWING IN THE footsteps of "Natural Wellington" (see last issue) is the South Waikato’s "Project Heritage Inventory" which aims to identify all the native forest, wetlands, historic sites, distinctive landscapes and trout habitat in the region. Backed by the New Zealand Employment Service and the District Council, the project will include the use of aerial maps to identify forest and other features. Details will then be verified in the field. Two project workers have already been employed. They hope to visit all sites to assess their condition, any threats facing them and to interview landowners to determine their attitudes towards the sites. Training has been provided by Forest and Bird’s South Waikato branch which is supervising the project. Once the data is collected another team-member will be employed to help prepare the report. The inventory is expected to be of great longterm value to the community and the council.
