The area is the habitat of the regionally uncommon plants such as the pillwort (Pilularia novae-zealandiae) and Pratia perpusilla; and temporary habitat for wading birds when water is shallow, including rare migratory species such as lesser yellowlegs and pectoral sandpiper, and the endemic wrybill.
