Ashley Riverbed Reserve Created

New Zealand's first riverbed reserve has been officially gazetted, safeguarding a 10km stretch of North Canterbury's Ashley River for the threatened wrybill plover. The population of the wrybill is estimated at between 3000 and 4000. In the August 1987 Forest & Bird we carried an article highlighting the work done by staff and pupils of Rangiora High School to create this reserve in the birds’ northernmost breeding ground. The pupils have since won a conservation award for their efforts.
