PENALTIES FOR POACHING
The penalties imposed for poaching in some other countries are apparently much heavier than here. In the United States of America, for instance, where the endeavour is to keep fishing and game shooting democratic, an offender for poaching in a sanctuary was recently mulcted in a fine equivalent to £IOO, besides being sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Some rather more befitting penalties have, however, recently been imposd in New Zealand, and undoubtedly such a course is justified and wise, as it is unfair to the lawabiding citizens, who are, of course, much in the majority, that the poacher, who is a difficult and expensive person to catch, should get off with merely a nominal fine.
