A microbe matures in a few minutes and divides, becoming two. If division takes place only once an hour, the descendants from the first one will, at the end of twenty-four hours, number 17,000,000 ' adult individuals. They also have their ' periods of quiescence. They may be dor- ' mant for years, until something occurs to ' stimulate them to renewed activity and multiplicatiou.
