SPORTING.

" T*-V T- ¥■ -"r ^ Glen Canny, it is reported from the North Island, is not likely to fulfill his N.Z. Cup engagement. Fleetham, looking very well; was the only thoroughbred shown at the stallion parade on Wednesday morning. Frank Donovan should do well .with this imported horse. Charlie Church is going back into the training game again, and well have charge ; of the preparation of Silverspire for the j jumping races this season. The late Dave Morton'a horses are to be sold. Killowen, who has been well nominated at the Gore meeting .should be a gAod proposition. Racing is reported to be fiourishing in and around the 'Caps, and quite a crop of new owners are reported to be considering registering their colours this season. Coldwater has been nominated for ihe mile and a-half and two mile trots at the Gore meeting, but Berry will have to oure him of hanging before he can be reJied on as a god bet. The short distance open races at Gore have attracted four smart sprinters in Silver Peak, Michaela, Killowen and Rokelaine. It will be interesting to see how handicapper Uibb measures this quartet up. Last Vue broke down on the local tracks on Thursday morning. Bad luck for Swanny Smit~ as he had her very well, and nominated her the night before for Gore. A Riverton correspondent is responsiMe -for the statement that a recently elected member of the committee of the Riverton Racing Club haa never been on a race couirse. Good luck to the gentleman who evidently ttoroughly believes in the old adage : "It is never too late to learn." Secretary Young should be well pieased with the nominations he recorded last Monday evening for the Gore Cluh's Spring Meeting. It is a fine list he publishes in another column, and this popular fixture which opens-the sporting season in Southland this season, promises to be unusually well patronised this year. Mr P. Fahey, chairman of the -course sub-coirimittee of the Riverton Racing Club, recently reported to his committee that the training tracks were in good order, and that trainers were satisfied with the facilities offered. Pat is a particularly lucky chairman in having a caretaker who can satisfy every tramer's whim. He should be worth his waight in gold to tne club. "Starter" in the "Mataura Ehsign," bewails the fact that the nominations received for the meeting this month are only . seven more than received for the last Autumn Meeting. "Starter" should remember that this i3 the beginning of the season and not nearly as many horses ,are ready to .race now as will he towai'ds the end of the season. "Put" Hogan has gone off to Wingatui for a while with a big string of horses. There are some good looking ones amonggt the tea-m, but I did not see any certain stake winners like old Golden King and Rorke's Drift. A couple of seasons ago "Put" was always sure of catching a stake with one or other of these two, no matter what else his team contained. According to a correspondent from Lumsden the local club intends holding another meeting to keep their club in the limelight in case some fresh permits are available under Georgje Hunter's bili. That is the only way, Lumsden, and you should know it, for that h> how Te Ttia Miok beat you for the last permit available in Southland. The success that has followed the granting of that permit to Otautau shows how very little the Commissioners knew of Southland, and I have every confidence that if the Lumsden club is granted a permit the district will do as Otautau did and show that it is long overdue.

TTTTTTTTTttTtttTi'TTT Abbey Joneg will frame the handicaps for the Tapanui meeting next January. Gibb McLean i3 surely flying high with old Awahou at Gore. Still, a Gore Cup stake would come in very handy jnst now. The Winton racing traek is in excellent order just now, and by November it should be at its best. The class engaged in the steeplechases -at Gore is not high class and Take Down will be hard to stop sbould she come down again. Next week we will have the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting t* open the ball in the south this season. The two classic races this year have added interest for Southlanders as they are well represented with both two and three-year-olds. Listening Post opened Digger Eric's winning aocount at Geraldine last week. May he keep on in the winning way ! The Riverton Racing Club is again going to review their programme of improve. ments, the committee is to meet on the course" next Tuesday. Frank Boyce, had bad luck with little AyecJiff as he got into a barb wire fence a few weeks ago just when he was ready to go into solid work for jumping events. Ayecliff was jumping very well, and must have been decidely awkward in some of the hunters races at the Otago Hunt Meeting this month. GORE RACING CLUB. 1TG DONATIONS FOR SPRING MEETING.
