A singular feature to be seen in Japan on New Year's Day is a grass rope running from house to hcuse, with symbolical decorations. It is believed to ward off evil spirits during the year. The oldest and most freouently-tapped rubber trees produce the ricliest sap, and j some treei which are tapped every other day will yield sap for more than a score of years.
