THE SQUABBLING PHILOSOPHERS.
Reading through an oid biography (writes a correspondent), I came across an amusing account of a sequel to a aiscussion between Carlyle and Ruskin, which is new to me and may be new to others of your readers. These discussions sometimes developed into somewhat heated arguments, which, however, usually endecl in a laugh or jest. On one occasion, when Ruskin had made a particularly strong attack, Carlyle carne out with :— 0. John Ruskii, lveep your tusk in, And smooth your ruffled plumes. VV horeto Ruskin instantly replied : — Tummus Carlyle, 0, That is the style, 0, To poetise a la Jim Crow.
