Higher forestry education of University standing is a relatively recent development in Italy, which has a long history of forest depletion, culminating in the vigorous counter-measures of Mussolini's Militia Rationale Forestale. Modern Italian forest policy is based on the recognition of the necessity for greatly increasing its forest resources (at present inadequate for its population of forty million) by the introduction of suitable fast-growing exotic species in supplement to its limited range of indigenous species ; and on the need for a more highly trained cadre of forest technicians freed from Fascist doctrines.
