TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT

(а) Five officers returned to Department—three as replacements, two to handle increased work. Five new appointments— two to meet increased work, and three for accounts inspection work. £18,525 provided on main estimates. (б) Previously charged to " Contingencies." (c) To meet cost of fire-watching equipment now come to charge. (d) Change of office accommodation at Wellington and Napier. Additional charge to meet cost of fittings, &e. Also additional space taken over in Auckland. £200 provided on main estimates. (e) Extra space taken over in Auckland to relieve congestion of stall'. £250 provided on main estimates. (/ ) Two Vehicle Inspectors returning from Forces—for a period additional to staff and then replacements—officer retiring and another being plaoed elsewhere. £15,010 provided on main estimates. (g) Two serious accidents to departmental vehicles makes additional financial provision necessary. £100 provided on main estimates. (h) To meet costs of increased patrol work to cope with heavier traffic on roads and to-cover increasing repair costs on the car fleet. £16,500 provided on main estimates.
