No. 22.—Petition of A. J. Simpson, of Christchurch. Praying for investigation into circumstances of his application for increase in war pension. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. The Committee is advised that the petitioner is entitled, on application, to a war veteran's allowance. 11th September, 1941.

No. 56. —Petition of C. M. Bathgate and Others, of Taranaki. Praying for compensation for injuries to men attending parades of the Home Guard. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered the petition. The Committee is of opinion that the Government has no legal liability for the payment of compensation in this case. In view, however, of the nature of Mr. Evans's injuries, the Committee recommends the Government to give most favourable consideration to a compassionate grant. Ist October, 1941.

Special Report. 1 have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the efficient services rendered by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. E. B. Harman. 15th October, 1941. p. l. Frost, Chairman.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its hearty appreciation of the services of its Chairman Mr. Frost, and has directed that a resolution to this effect be placed on the minutes of the Committee, and be reported to the House. 15th October, 1941. p. Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, lias held five meetings, with an average attendance of four members. Four petitions were considered and reported on to the House. 15th October, 1941. F. L. Frost, Chairman.
