The following statement shows the disposal of the total funds (including those of the central bodies) as at the 31st December, 1940 : —

Sickness. The number of members sick during 1940 was 23,649, equal to 23-2 per 100 members at risk. The sickness experienced during 1940 was 317,561 weeks, equal to 13 weeks 3 days per sick member, and 3 weeks 1 day for each member at risk. Mortality. A statement of the average mortality experienced during the years 1936-40 is given below, but it takes no account of age incidence : —

Sick and Funeral Funds. The contributions and entrance fees paid to Sick and Funeral Funds in 1940 amounted to £191,197. Divided by the mean number of members, the average for 1940 was £1 15s. 10d., as against £1 15s. 3d. for 1939. The interest and rent received by the lodges and central bodies amounted to £189,454 in 1940, equal to £1 15s. 6d. per member, as against £1 14s. lid. for 1939. The amount of sickness- benefit paid was £186,323 in 1940, equal to £7 17s. 7d. per member sick, and £1 14s. lid. per member, as against £7 Bs. Id. and £1 14s. 2d. respectively for 1939. Viewing the anjpunt paid in relation to the weeks of sickness, the average benefit per week is found to be lis. 9d. in 1940, as against 12s. 2d. for 1939. The funeral benefit paid amounted to £52,787 in 1940, equal to 9s. lid. per member, as compared with 9s. 2d. for 1939. -The total worth of the Sick and Funeral Funds at the beginning of 1940 was £4,392,753, and at the end of the year £4,474,227. The balance of gain for the year was £81,474 or 15s. 3d. per member. Investment of Funds. The net income from investments credited to the Sick and Funeral Funds for 1940 amounted to £189,454, the average rate being £4 7s. 4d. per cent., as against £4 10s. 7d. in 1939.

PART II. —TRADE-UNIONS. One new trade-union was registered during the year—viz., New Zealand Glassworkers' Union. There were six unions on the register at the end of the year.
