CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT —continued.

(а) Increased provision required to cover work provided for in previous year but postponed. (б) Underexpenditure due to delay in filling an order for spare parts. Provision is made this year to cover the order, in addition to current year's requirements. (c) Item reduced, as special investigation in connection with employment and incomes has been completed. (id) Increased volume of postages anticipated, mainly due to printing of additional census and statistical publications. (e) Increase due to larger number of forms being required. (/) Provision made for twelve months' rent, whereas last year part of the period only was provided for. (g) Increase due to additional publications. (h) Increased provision necessary, as last year progress in collecting statistics was retarded owing to delay in printing forms, &c. (i) Number of officers, 9. Travelling-expenses, £14 2s. 6d.; motor-hire, 17s. 6d. (j) Mainly to Legislative Departments.
