YEAR ENDING 31 MARCH, 1940.

DEPARTMENT OE EXTERNAL AEEAIRS —continued.

REMARKS. (a) The expenditure for last year covered a period of two years. (h) Number of officers, 12. Travelling-allowances, £12; travelling-expenses, £47 ; fares, £58 ; motor services, £12. Increased provision necessary this year through the appointment of an additional Inspector. (c) The expenditure for this year includes an extension to one of the copra plantations to replace worn-out areas. (d) The apparent saving is due to the fact that imprest accounts for the second half of March were not received in time for inclusion in the expenditure figures for the year and were held over for the new year's accounts. The receipts for the year 1938-39 amounted to £62,089. Receipts for this year are expected to amount to £62,334. (e) The increases are accounted for by the inclusion of the imprest accounts referred to above. It is expected that receipts will cover this expenditure. (f) This expenditure will be fully recouped. The increase over the expenditure for the previous year is due to anticipated larger shipments. (,g) Banana shipments were greater than anticipated. This expenditure has been fully recouped.
