REMARKS. (а) £1,100 also paid out of " Unauthorized" prior to 31st March last. (б) This expenditure is offset by free accommodation granted by the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board to Government Departments. (c) Overexpenditure due to the additional departmental offices opened during the year. (■d) The major portion of expenditure under this heading will be recovered during this year and next. (e) Assistance towards such gatherings as International Jamboree of Boy Scouts, Pan-Pacific Women's Conference, and International Gathering of Girl Guides, &c. (/) Chiefly for literary competitions under the auspices of the National Historical Committee. (g) Private persons advanced £1,000 for preliminary expenses of the Art Exhibition on condition that the Government advanced a similar amount. £245 of this sum was paid last year, and the balance is now provided for. (h) To provide special assistance in connection with Maori participation in Centennial celebrations and to contribute towards the cost of the Whare-runanga at Waitangi and certain other Maori memorials. (i) Assistance to National Broadcasting Service towards cost of musical and dramatic festivals in Centennial year. These festivals are being conducted by the Broadcasting Service in collaboration with the National Centennial Music Committee and the provincial Music Committees. (j) To provide the costs incurred in connection with national celebrations held by the Government, and also to provide part of the cost of national celebrations being carried out by Provincial Centennial Councils in conjunction with the National Centennial Council. (k) Contributions towards the cost of provincial, district, and local Centennial celebrations and memorials. (I) Payments last year included amounts due from previous years. (m) The additional provision this year is due to increased use of this service. (n) Expenses of preparation of a plan for the complete settlement and development of the Hutt Valley.
