Designs. The number of applications lodged during the year was 169, being an increase of 44 over the previous year, bringing the total number of applications as at the 31st December, 1930, to 2,989. The number of design registrations in force at that date was 920, of which 115 were registered during the year. 129 design-registrations became void by reason of the non-payment of renewal fees. Renewal of the term of copyright for the second term of five years was effected in 47 cases, while 18 were renewed for the third term of five years. The number of applications lodged by persons resident in New Zealand was 112 ; 29 were from Australia, 22 from Great Britain, 5 from the United States of America, and 1 from Holland. Applications lodged covered 10 classes : 62 applications were lodged in respect of articles included in Class 1, 28 in Class ,3, and 20 in Class 13. The fees received during the year amounted to £182 Is. 6d., being an increase of £69 lis. 6d. as compared with 1929. Tbade-marks. There were 1,265 applications for registration of trade-marks lodged during the year under review, showing a decrease of 94 in the number for the previous year ; but, as stated in last year's report, with the exception of 1920, in which year 1,391 were lodged, the total for 1929 is the largest yet received in any one year. Notwithstanding the slight decrease in the number of applications for registration, the total fees in respect of trade-marks received during the year amounted to £3,905 4s. lid., representing an increase of £326 ss. 6d. over the amount received in 1929. The principal increases were in connection with fees paid on registration and renewal of registration, being £244 10s. 6d. and £62 2s. 6d. respectively. There was a slight increase in the number of applications lodged by persons resident in New Zealand as compared with the previous year, while the number of applications from Great Britain was 18 less than in 1929. Applications from the United States of America and Germany remained about the same, but there was a substantial falling-off so far as New South Wales and Victoria were concerned. The number of applications from France, which in 1929 more than doubled the average number of applications for the years 1924-28 (inclusive), was less than one-fourth of the number for the previous year. The total number of applications for registration of trade-marks received by the Office up to the 31st December, 1930, was 30,054. With regard to the different classes of goods, Class 42 (which covers substances used as food or as ingredients, &c.) again has the greatest number of applications, while Class 3 (chemical substances prepared for use in medicine and pharmacy) is next in order. The other main classes range in the following order: Class 38, "Articles of clothing"; Class I,'" Chemical substances used in manufactures, photography, or philosophical research, and anti-corrosives " ; Class 47, " Candles, common soap, &c. " ; Class 8, " Philosophical instruments, scientific instruments, &c. " ; and Class 48, " Perfumery (including toilet articles, preparations for the teeth and hair, and perfumed soap)." As compared with 1929, there has been a considerable increase in the number of applications in Class 3, " Chemical substances prepared for use in medicine and pharmacy " ; and Class 1, " Chemical substances used in manufactures, &c." On the other hand, the number of applications in Class 38, " Articles of clothing," was 77, as against 115 in the previous year. Patent Agents. The number of patent attorneys on the register as at the 31st December, 1930, was nineteen, no names having been added during the year. Conclusion.
