Every education district showed an increase in the roll number at the end of the year. The increase in the North Island amounted to 4-5 per cent., and in the South Island to 2-6 per cent. An estimate of the actual roll number of all children receiving primary education * can be obtained by taking into account children in attendance at public schools (exclusive of secondary departments of district high schools), Native-village schools, schools at the Chatham Islands, private primary schools subject to inspection, and the lower departments of secondary schools.
