For the first two years Oregon pine and Norway spruce were somewhat backward.Jf These varieties are now amongst the most rapid growers, probably owing to their roots having reached the desired moisture, attainable about 2 ft. below the surface. Of the less valuable timbers, birch, alder, and poplars are thriving ; but in any future extension-work under similar conditions the inclusion of these trees is not desirable. No labour was directed upon the plantation during the year, although at an early date the suppression of the rank gorse-plants that threaten to interrupt the progress of the smaller trees will require to be undertaken. In expending the small sum of £32 3s. sd. in resuscitating, clearing, and disbudding works, much benefit has been derived by the plantation generally. It was not possible to state accurately in last vein's report to what extent the damage by fire had attained, as in certain places the undergrowth had been of insufficient density to create enough heat to permanently injure the trees; and in such eases, although the smaller lateral branches were completely destroyed, the trunks and leaders gave indication of life.
