The large increase in the number of prisons charged with drunkenness calls for notice, but no definite conclusions can be drawn from the figures. Offences of this nature are governed by a variety of conditions, such as increase of population, an influx of strangers, prosperity of the country, and last, but not least, the vigilance of the police. The following table shows the convictions for drunkenness per ten thousand of the population, for the years, L 907, 1908, and 1909, in Australia and New Zealand. The number of prosecutions (256) against hotelkeepers during the year shows an increase of 43 as compared with the preceding year.
