EDUCATION: NATIVE-SCHOOL RESERVE AT HOKONUI (RETURN SHOWING RENT PAID AND OTHER PARTICULARS IN RESPECT OF).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 18th November, 1909. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The total amount of rent paid to the Education Department in respect of the 2,000 acres of Native-school reserve at Hokonul, near Gore, Southland ; (2) the rent per aore payable on the land; (3) how the money is expended ; (4) what period is the land leased for, and from what date." —(Mr. Parata.)
Return. (1.) The total amount of rent paid to the Education Department in respect of the 2,000 acres of Native-school reserve at Hokonui, near Gore, Southland : £645 3s. 2d. since 1890. Before 1890 the Native-school teachers' salaries which these rents are devoted to were paid direct to the Public Trustee. (2.) The rent per acre payable on the land : 6d. per acre. (3.) How the money is expended : Native-school teachers' salaries. (4.) What period is the land leased for, and from what date: Lease is for twenty-one years, from Ist January, 1908. J. W.
