List of Exempted Institutions.
One Home that received exemption failed to comply with the Department's requirements for the accommodation of the inmates, and. in order to settle the difficulty, adopted the expedient of ceasing to admit children under six. thereby removing itself from the provisions of the Act. Private individuals to the number of fifteen also received exemption. These were either adopting parents e>r near relatives or friends of the infants concerned. Deaths. Out of I he I <>17 infants under six years of age t hat were' at one time or another on the books during 11)08, 2<i died that is, 2-56 per cent. Of these, 21 died in foster-homes, and sin hospitals or nursinghomes. Seventeen were under six months old, 5 between six and twelve months, and 4 between one and two years. Every death was, of course, reported to the Coroner, and in six eases inquests were held.
