It may be of interest to give the expenditure per head of population in some otherplaces and countries : For primary education, public funds (general and local) contribute per head of the population in England and Wales, 12s. 3d. ; London, 17s. ; Wales alone, 15s. sd. ; Scotland, 12s. 4d. ; Ireland, 6s. 7d. In New York, the cost to the public purse of primary and secondary education (excluding the cost of new buildings) is £1 Is. 7d. per head of the population, as against 15s. 3d. (or 17s. Id. including the income from reserves) in New Zealand. Table N2 gives, for the years 1898, 1903, and 1906-8, an analysis of the total expenditure from public funds alone (exclusive of the income from reserves), in two forms—the actual total amounts to the nearest thousand pounds, and the expenditure per head of the population to the nearest penny.
